Autodesk has released Maya 2022.2, the latest version of its 3D modelling and animation software, adding scaling controls to the new Solidify deformer, and improving workflow in the S***** Editor.
Maya's Bifrost and USD plugins have also been updated.
What's new in Autodesk Maya 2022.2
New scaling controls for the Solidify deformer
The main change in Maya itself is to the Solidify deformer, which gets new scaling controls to make it possible to resize geometry tagged as non-deformable.
Users can scale 'islands' of non-deformable geometry along surface normals or using tangent planes, and scaling can be controlled on a per-island or global basis, as shown in the video above.
Workflow improvements to the S***** Editor and Application Home
Workflow improvements in the core software include new option in the Attribute Editor to save all of the s***** tabs open to a file, and to show tab and space characters in the S***** Editor.
The new Application Home screen added in Maya 2022.1 gets a small update, now displaying file locations from the side menu of the Recent Files list.
Updates to the Bifrost and USD
Maya 2022.2 provides Bifrost Extension for Maya version 2.3.0.0, which includes new features, performance improvements, and bug fixes.
Bifrost Extension for Maya version 2.3.0.0 provides you with a faster and more interactive experience with features such as: new interactive sliders, faster plug-in loading, dynamic constants that remove the need for compilation after an initial value change, and feedback ports that are preserved so you can resume a simulation even if you pause playback to change your graph.
Updating your old graphs is now easier - when you open a graph with nodes and ports that no longer exist, these nodes now appear differently - as unknown nodes - with their external connections and input values preserved so you can easily fix your graph.
Creating simulations is more convenient, and you can now vary the source properties at emission using different types such as fields or array of values.
Maya 2022.2 provides USD Extension for Maya version 0.11.0, which includes stability fixes, new features and performance improvements.
USD Extension for Maya version 0.11.0 includes stability fixes and added evaluation fixes such as: cards drawing mode in VP2 render delegate, patch curves drawn as wireframe in default material mode and color management support improvements. This version includes new features and performance improvements such as: unshareable stage support, Attribute Editor improvements (addition of metadata to prims), point instance selection, point snapping performance, as well as support for EXR textures and USDZ import.
Attribute Editor:Newly, unshareable stage support now exists for proxyShape nodes in Maya. Start your procedural programming workflow by creating a stage and toggling the shareable/unshareable stage checkbox in the Attribute Editor and then continue your work with Bifrost Extension for Maya. Layer Editor:Uneditable/ read-only layers now show as locked in the Layer Editor. See read-only layers in the USD Layer Editor contexual menu.
Migrating to Python 3
Maya is moving to Python 3! You can now begin converting your Python s*****s and plug-ins to Python 3!
The Python Software Foundation ceased supporting Python 2 in January 2020. In response to this, Maya now starts in Python 3 mode by default on all platforms. Your Python 2 s*****s and plug-ins can now be migrated to Python 3.
Smaller changes
Other than that, there are a few minor features listed in the online documentation, including a bugfix update for the Maya to Arnold plugin, updates to the Maya API, and two new environmental variables.
