Der englische Captain John Smith landet 1607 in der Neuen Welt. Mit an Bord ist auch sein Erzfeind, ein aufgeblasener Edelmann, der nur des Goldes wegen nach Amerika gekommen ist. Die ansässigen Powhatan-Indianer wollen von den Fremden vor allem Feuerwaffen. Als ihnen diese verweigert werden, kommt es zu Auseinandersetzungen mit den Weißen, aber auch zu Intrigen innerhalb des Stammes. Der schönen Häuptlingstochter Pocahontas, die sich in Smith verliebt hat, gelingt es jedoch, zwischen den Parteien zu vermitteln.
