Der vor zehn Jahren freigesetzte Virus hat den größten Teil der Menschheit ausgerottet und die wenigen Überlebenden hausen in städtischen Ruinen, die von ihrer einstigen Zivilisation übrig geblieben sind.
Während einer Expedition in den Wald trifft eine Gruppe um Malcom auf ein intelligentes Volk der Affen, das dort unter der Führung von Caesar lebt. Malcom und Ellie erkennen, dass diese wie auch die Menschen nur verteidigen wollen, was ihnen wichtig ist: ihre Heimat, ihre Familien und ihre Freiheit. Gemeinsam plädieren sie für gegenseitiges Verständnis und erwirken ein Friedensabkommen, welches jedoch von kurzer Dauer ist. Für Dreyfus sind die Affen schuld am Virus und damit die erklärten Feinde. Er findet zahlreiche Anhänger, die vor Gewalt nicht zurückschrecken. Ein letzter Eklat scheint unausweichlich - es kommt zum Kampf, der die Vorherrschaft über die Erde endgültig entscheiden soll.
