Da sein allein erziehender Vater nach einem Autounfall im Krankenhaus liegt, wird der 12-jährige Emil Tischbein aus der ostdeutschen Provinz nach Berlin geschickt. Dort soll er mit Pastorin Hummel und deren Sohn zwei Wochen seiner Ferien verbringen. Im Zug stiehlt ihm der zwielichtige Gauner Max Grundeis all seine Ersparnisse. Emil nimmt die Verfol-gung auf und lernt dabei Pony Hütchen, die Chefin einer Berliner Kinderbande, kennen. Die beschließt kurzerhand, dem Jungen zu helfen.
