Homer Smith, reisender schwarzer "Unternehmer" mit goldenem Herzen, bleibt in Texas mit dem Auto liegen und wird von fünf aus der DDR geflohenen deutschen Nonnen gebeten, ihnen unentgeltlich eine Kapelle zu bauen. Der Baptist geht erst mürrisch, dann mit Begeisterung ans Werk. Mexikanische Nachbarn helfen, und als der geschäftstüchtige Unternehmer aus dem Nachbarort eine Ladung Ziegelsteine als "Rückversicherung" stiftet, steht die schmucke Kapelle fertig da. Homer macht sich aus dem Staub, da er nichts von Ehrungen hält.

Sidney Poitier holt sich als erster Schwarzer den Hauptrollen-Oscar.

Plot:
Homer Smith, an unemployed construction worker heading out west, stops at a remote farm in the desert to get water when his car overheats. The farm is being worked by a group of East European Catholic nuns, headed by the strict Mother Maria, who believes that Homer has been sent by God to build a much-needed church in the desert...
