Der New Yorker Polizist John McClane fährt zum Weihnachtsfest nach Kalifornien, um sich dort mit seiner Frau, die bei einem japanischen Konzern Karriere gemacht hat, zu versöhnen. Als er in dem riesigen Bürohaus ankommt und sich gerade im Waschraum frischmacht, stürmen dreißig schwerbewaffnete Gangster, die es auf die Wertpapiere des Konzerns abgesehen haben, das Gebäude und riegeln es hermetisch ab. McClane kann entkommen und kämpft in den verlassenen Stockwerken gegen die Bande, wobei es ihm auch gelingt, die Polizei zu rufen. Mit Schützenpanzern und Helikoptern richten die Beamten daraufhin schreckliche Verwüstungen an und sprengen das halbe Haus in die Luft. McClane gelingt es, den Anführer der Gangster zur Strecke zu bringen und seine Frau und die Geiseln zu befreien.

Action-Klassiker in der John McClane zum ersten Mal Jagd auf Terroristen macht.
