Auf einem Filmfestival versucht der unbekannte Schriftsteller Brian Smith mit dem alternden Filmstar Cesar Valentin in Kontakt zu treten. Als dies nicht gelingt, erschießt er ihn, kommt kurz darauf aber selbst durch einen Unfall ums Leben. Beide landen in einem seltsamen Hotel, in dem die Behandlung der Gäste sich daran orientiert, wie berühmt sie auf der Erde noch sind. Während Valentin herauszufinden versucht, was Brian zu seiner Tat bewegt hat, rückt für beide der Tag näher, an dem sie auf der Erde in Vergessenheit geraten sein werden.
