It quickly becomes clear that these are not normal missing persons cases - an ancient danger lurks in a labyrinth beneath the town. Lara Glanz is still looking for her niece Magda, who the police have declared dead. At the same time, in Wäldern she has become a detective of the inexplicable - she is approached by Jochen Rust, whose daughter Merle has disappeared since the flood in the Ahr valley. While his wife wants to declare her dead, he is sure that Merle is alive and asks Lara for help. Despite all her sympathy, she is initially overwhelmed. But then Merle appears out of nowhere, standing dripping wet in her parents' garden. The girl is a different person - she speaks loving words, but moves through her former home as if remotely controlled. Above all, however, Merle seeks Lara's company. It turns out that Lara and her past are themselves part of the strange occurrences in Wäldern. With the help of Dorothea and Rudolf, Lara finds out that her father was a member of a secret society that guarded the portal to the underworld beneath the village of Wäldern. And her adopted sister Greta also seems to be interwoven with the events in the other world, in which Merle has apparently been for the last two years and from which she has returned as a shadow of herself. Lara follows an inspiration and manages to free Merle from all the ghosts: the girl is herself again. And she can report that she also saw Magda in the other world - apparently Lara's niece is there between the worlds. So Lara was right: Magda is alive.

In dem kleinen Ort Wäldern verschwinden unter rätselhaften Umständen immer wieder junge Bewohner. Eine davon ist Magda, die Nichte der Pianistin Lara Glanz (Rosalie Thomass). Die kehrt so in ihren alten Heimatort zurück und nimmt eine Stelle als Lehrerin an. Außerdem sucht sie auf eigene Faust nach Magda, deren Verschwinden immer mysteriöser erscheint.
Doch auch andere Vorkommnisse in dem Ort geben Lara Rätsel auf. Schließlich sieht sie sich mit Kräften konfrontiert, die nicht von dieser Welt zu stammen scheinen. Verbündete bei ihrer Suche findet Lara in der esoterisch begabten Dorothea Freiberg (Sabine Vitua) und dem kauzigen Professor Rudolf Klein (Peter Franke). Die Drei ahnen nicht, welchen Kräften sie sich werden stellen müssen. Plötzlich wird klar: Lara selbst spielt eine ganz zentrale Rolle in diesem Mysterium.
