Das Magnetfeld der Erde aber hält Sonnenstürme von deren Oberfläche ab, also warnt Dr. Mayfield angesichts sich zuspitzender Naturkatastrophen vor der ganz großen und finalen. Nach anfänglichem Zögern schenken im der Präsident und sein Vater der General Glauben, doch da sind einige verhängnisvolle Fehlentscheidungen schon getroffen, die nun Mayfields Frau und Sohn draußen in der provinziellen Kleinstadt zum Verhängnis werden könnten.
