Paolo ( Giuseppe Battiston) verbringt seinen Tag am liebsten in einer Taverne in einem kleinen Dorf nahe Goriza, wo jeder jeden kennt und Gerüchte sich schnell verbreiten. Paolo ist keiner, der Wein predigt und Wasser trinkt, ein 40 Jahre alter Außenseiter, zynisch und menschenfeindlich, ein professioneller Trinker und zwanghafter Lügner, der widerwillig in der Cafeteria eines Altersheims arbeitet und erfolglos dem Traum nachhängt, seine Ex-Frau Stefania zurück zu gewinnen.
Alles ändert sich, als Zoran (Rok Prasnikar) auf der Bildfläche erscheint: ein 15 Jahre alter Junge mit dicken Brillengläsern, den Paolo von einer entfernten Verwandten „geerbt“ hat, der sonderbar spricht und etwas zurückgeblieben wirkt.
