Baltimore im Jahre 1849. Der erfolglose Schriftsteller Edgar Allan Poe hat keinen Penny und ist Alkoholiker. Wenigstens ist die hübsche Emily aus reichem Hause in ihn verliebt, doch deren einflussreicher Vater hintertreibt die Beziehung, wo er kann. Da wird Poe auch noch zum Verdächtigen, als in der Stadt eine Mordserie anhebt und der oder die Täter sich dabei an Poes Motive halten. Der ermittelnde Detective aber glaubt an Poes Unschuld und bindet ihn in die Fahndung ein. Da wird Emily entführt.
Zwischen Serienkillerthriller, Horror im Historiengewand und, passend zum Thema, einer viktorianischen Detektivgeschichte siedelt James McTeigue seinen düsteren Film an, der sich nicht nur im Titel an Poes Prosa orientiert. John Cusack überzeugt in der Titelrolle, Stimmung und Kulissen erinnern an Guy Ritchies "Sherlock Holmes", zwischen den Hauptdarstellern entwickelt sich eine filigrane Buddy-Symbiose. Gediegener Grusel und schwarzer Humor in stilvollem Ambiente.
