Ein armer Soldat (Rolf Ludwig) begegnet einer Hexe, die ihm Gold verspricht, wenn er ihr ein altes Feuerzeug aus einem hohlen Baum holt. Er befördert das Gold zutage, der Hexe aber händigt er das Feuerzeug wegen eines Streits nicht aus. In der nächsten Stadt richtet er sich gut ein, gibt den Armen von seinem Gold, läßt sich jedoch von den Reichen ausnehmen.
