Far Cry 5 ist ein Ego-Shooter in einer Open World und spielt im fiktiven Hope County im US Bundesstaat Montana. Die Kampagne kann im Solo- oder Zwei-Spieler-Koop erlebt werden, wobei aber nur der Haupspieler den Missionsfortschritt speichert. Der Spieler übernimmt die Rolle eines jungen Sheriffs (männlich oder weiblich), der neu in die Region kommt, während der religiöse Fanatiker Joseph Seed, der sich selbst Vater nennt und die Sekte The Project at Eden's Gate anführt, die Region mit Gewalt abriegelt. Wie in Far Cry Primal kann man gefährliche Tiere, wie einen Bären, einen Hund oder eine Wildkatze für sich kämpfen lassen - es gibt aber auch viele menschliche KI-Begleiter, die mit ihren Spezialfähigkeiten aushelfen. Erstmals sind aber auch Luftkämpfe in richtigen Flugzeugen möglich. Ansonsten gibt es aber auch jede Menge normale Autos, die in die Region passen, auch viele Geländefahrzeuge. Zudem kehrt der Level-Editor aus Far Cry 3 in einer deutlich erweiterten Form namens Far Cry Arcade zurück. Neu sind auch einige Nahkampfwaffen, wie der Vorschlaghammer. Außerdem gibt es keine Minimap mehr, sondern einen optionalen Kompass am oberen Bildschirmrand. Die in drei Gebiete aufgeteilte Spielwelt kann man frei erkunden und auch die Reihenfolge der Gebiete ist frei wählbar. Jedes Gebiet muss aber befreit werden und der jeweilige Boss der Region besiegt werden - ein Mitglied der Seed-Familie - bevor der Kampf gegen Anführer Joseph freigeschaltet wird.
