Ausgerechnet in der heißen Vorweihnachtsphase verschwindet der Weihnachtsmann spurlos. Schnell wird klar, dass der in Sicherheitskreise mit dem Codenamen „Red One“ bedachte Geschenkeüberbringer anscheinend gekidnappt wurde. Callum Drift (Dwayne Johnson) wird als Sicherheitschef des Nordpols schleunigst auf den Plan gerufen, um den Fall zu lösen und den Weihnachtsmann wieder rechtzeitig vor dem Fest zurück an den Nordpol zu bekommen. Mit ins Boot wird Jack O'Malley (Chris Evans) geholt, der einer der bekanntesten Kopfgeldjäger auf dem Planeten und Callum Drifts Meinung nach nicht immer der einfachste Zeitgenosse ist.

Schriftsteller Ben Mears (Lewis Pullmann) kehrt nach vielen Jahren Abwesenheit in seine Heimatstadt „Salems Lot“ zurück. Er will hier an seinem neuen Buch arbeiten und möchte in die Marsten-Villa einziehen, die auf einem Hügel steht und über der Stadt thront. Doch jemand ist ihm zuvorgekommen, die beiden Antiquitätenhändler Richard Straker (Pilou Asbæk) und Kurt Barlow. Während Straker einen Laden in der Stadt eröffnet, sieht man Barlow nicht, da er sich angeblich auf einer Geschäftsreise befindet. Es dauert nicht lange, bis sich im Ort merkwürdige Ereignisse häufen. Offenbar sind Vampire am Werk und der Herd ist die Marsten-Villa.
