In naher Zukunft begleiten menschenähnliche Androiden, die „Simulates“, die Menschen. Das Paar Faye und Evan lassen Duplikate von sich als Simulates herstellen, um ihre Liebe ewig zu machen. Aber dann hat Evan einen tödlichen Unfall. Um mit ihrer Trauer fertigzuwerden, sucht Faye Trost beim Androiden Evan. Doch sie merkt schnell, dass die künstliche Person anders ist und den echten Evan nicht ersetzen kann. Anstatt ihn wie vorgeschrieben stillzulegen, lässt sie ihn illegal in einem Apartment weiter-„leben“. Evan trifft dort auf den begabten Programmierer Casey, welcher ihm dabei helfen will menschlicher zu werden, um Faye zurückzugewinnen. Sein neuer Freund wird jedoch von einem Agenten der Behörde für künstliche Intelligenz gesucht. Evans Zeit läuft ab.
