Die Familie Gemstone hat in den USA eine lange Historie als Fernsehprediger („Televangelist“) – mit unehrlichem Verhalten und Gier hinter den Kulissen. Eli (John Goodman) ist der Patriarch, dessen drei erwachsene Kinder eigene Pläne für die Zeit nach dessen Abtritt haben.

Der älteste Sohn ist Jesse (Danny McBride), der einerseits noch im Schatten des Vaters lebt, andererseit aber schon seinen eigenen Schritt ins Rampenlicht plant. Dabei will er auch eine Modernisierung des „Familienbetriebs“ vorantreiben und hat hochgesteckte Ziele. Amber (Cassidy Freeman) ist seine Ehefrau.

Jesses jüngere Schwester Judy (Edi Patterson) ist mit BJ (Tim Baltz) verlobt. Das Nesthäckchen Kevin (Adam DeVine) ist der rebellischste unter der jungen Generation.
