Nach jahrelangen Reisen kehrt William Wallace (Mel Gibson) zurück ins heimische Schottland des 13. Jahrhunderts, das unter dem Joch der Briten ächzt. Seine geheime Romanze mit einer Landschönheit findet ein jähes Ende. Was anschließend als Vendetta beginnt, wird schon bald zum Aufstand gegen die Gewaltherrschaft. Doch Intrigen machen Wallace das Leben schwer.
Mel Gibsons knapp dreistündige Schlachtplatte ist ein unbändiger Film von animalischer Wucht und Intensität. Die endlos wirkenden Kampfsequenzen zählen zu den erinnerungswürdigsten Momenten der Filmgeschichte. Nicht ganz so stark sind die stillen Szenen. Doch wenn Gibson als Märtyrer Gas gibt, ist "Braveheart" nicht zu schlagen.

Schottland im 13. Jahrhundert. Der englische König Edward I. führt ein brutales Regiment über das Land. Edward I. erkennt in Wallace einen gefährlichen Gegner und schickt seine Schwiegertochter, die französische Prinzessin Isabelle, als Vermittlerin zu Wallace. Aus dieser Begegnung wird eine Freundschaft, die sich in leidenschaftliche Liebe verwandelt. Doch nicht nur gegen die Engländer hat Wallace zu kämpfen. Auch die schottischen Adligen verfolgen eigene Interessen. Doch ohne ihre Unterstützung kämpft William einen verlorenen Kampf…
