Im Jahr 180 nach Christus steht Kaiser Marc Aurel am Ziel seiner Träume: Mit den germanischen Stämmen sind die letzten Feinde besiegt. Nun gilt es nur noch, einen Nachfolger zu installieren. Der Kaiser favorisiert seinen Feldherrn Maximus, Sohn Commodus hingegen rechnet mit sich selbst. Mit der Entscheidung des Vaters unzufrieden, tötet er diesen und versucht Maximus zu ermorden. Dem gelingt die Flucht, die ihn schließlich ins Kolosseum Roms führt. Von hier aus startet er seinen Rachefeldzug gegen den Thronräuber Commodus.

Beschreibung:
Im antiken Rom schreibt man das Jahr 180 nach Christus. Der siegreiche General Maximus ist der Liebling des Kaisers Marcus Aurelius, und der Herrscher will den mutigen Kriegsherrn sogar zu seinem Nachfolger bestimmen. Seinem eigenen Sohn Commodus, der sich mit Vorliebe an grausamen Gladiatorenkämpfen ergötzt, traut der Kaiser das schwierige Amt nicht zu. Als der machtbesessene Commodus das erfährt, tötet er seinen Vater und lässt sich selbst zum Cäsaren krönen. Er verstößt Maximus vom Hof und befiehlt seinen Tod. Maximus gelingt die Flucht, und er kann sich in seine Heimat durchschlagen, wo er nach Jahren blutiger Schlachten endlich seine Frau und seinen Sohn wiedersehen will. Doch Commodus Schergen kamen ihm zuvor und töteten seine Familie.
