Die Collegestudenten Grace und Jim befinden sich in Partylaune auf dem Weg in die Semesterferien, als bei strömenden Regen plötzlich ein mysteriöser Mann im Lichtkegel ihrer Scheinwerfer auftaucht und sich als John Ryder vorstellt. Trotz Vorbehalten seitens Grace nehmen die beiden den unbekannten Anhalter mit, bereuen dies allerdings sehr bald, denn der Unbekannte entpuppt sich als psychopathischer Serienkiller, der ein Katz-und-Maus-Spiel mit dem Pärchen beginnt. Grace und Jim gelingt zunächst die Flucht, aber der Hitcher zieht auf der Jagd nach ihnen eine blutige Spur der Vernichtung hinter sich her. Gibt es für die beiden Studenten ein Entkommen aus diesem furchtbaren Albtraum?
