Karate ist mehr als nur Kampf. Diese Lektion wird Daniel, ein Teenager aus dem San Fernando Valley, von einem äußerst unkonventionellen Lehrer lernen: Mr. Miyagi, einem älteren Handwerker und Karate-Meister. Als er Daniel vor Angriffen der Cobra Kai rettet, einer brutalen Gang aus Karateschulschlägern, bringt Miyagi seinem jungen Freund die Bedeutung von Ehre und Selbstvertrauen bei und schult ihn in der Kunst der Selbstverteidigung. Diese Lektionen werden überlebenswichtig, als der hoffnungslose Außenseiter Daniel bei den jährlichen Karatemeisterschaften im Valley auf den sadistischen Anführer der Cobra Kai, Johnny, trifft.

Beschreibung
Nachdem er mit seiner Mutter von New Jersey nach Los Angeles umgezogen ist, hat der junge Daniel Schwierigkeiten, sich in der neuen Umgebung zurechtzufinden. Hoffnung verspricht die süße Ali, auf die Daniel ein Auge wirft. Das wiederum missfällt Johnny, dem brutalen Anführer einer Gang von Karateschülern. Als der alternde japanische Hausmeister Miyagi beobachtet, wie die Gang Daniel bewusstlos prügelt, schreitet er ein und schlägt sie in die Flucht. Er bietet Daniel an, ihn unter seine Fittiche zu nehmen und ihm das wirkliche Karate beizubringen.
Überraschungshit aus dem Jahr 1984, inszeniert von "Rocky"-Regisseur John G. Avildsen, weshalb auch nicht weiter überrascht, dass die Handlung den Weg eines Außenseiters bis zum großen Finalkampf nachzeichnet. Den eigentlichen Mittelpunkt des Films bildet aber die Freundschaft zwischen dem US-Teenie Ralph Macchio und seinem japanischem Lehrmeister ("Pat" Morita), der ihm über allerhand abwegige Aufgaben den eigentlichen Sinn von Karate nahebringen will. Es folgten drei Fortsetzungen sowie 2010 ein Remake mit Jackie Chan in der Rolle des Lehrers.

Daniel (Ralph Macchio) zieht mit seiner Mutter von New Jersey nach Kalifornien. Am Strand lernt er dort die blonde Ali (Elisabeth Shue) kennen. Als er ihr bei einem Streit mit ihrem Ex-Freund Johnny zu Hilfe eilt, bekommt Daniel die Prügel seines Lebens. Um sich gegen seine Feinde durchzusetzen, nimmt er Karate-Unterricht bei dem Hauswart Miyagi (‘Pat’ Morita). Daniel lernt schnell, dass die Karate-Kunst wenig mit brutaler Gewalt zu tun hat. Beim großen Karate-Turnier nimmt er teil und muss im Endkampf gegen Johnny antreten, der sämtliche schmutzigen Tricksegen ihn gebraucht.
