Ein riesiger Asteroid rast auf die Erde zu und droht diese zu zerstören. Im Auftrag der US-Weltraumbehörde NASA fliegen der Ölbohrspezialist Harry Stamper und sein Team an Bord von zwei Spaceshuttles dem Killerstein entgegen. Ihr Auftrag lautet auf dem Asteroiden aufzusetzen, ein tiefes Loch zu bohren, darin eine Atombombe zu versenken und sich dann wieder auf den Heimweg zu machen, ehe der Sprengsatz per Funk gezündet werden soll.
