Tarzans Eltern geraten vor der Küste Afrikas in einen schweren Sturm, erleiden Schiffbruch und werden bald darauf von einem Leoparden getötet. Das Gorilla-Weibchen Kala nimmt daraufhin das verwaiste Bündel Mensch an sich und zieht es groß. Jahre später, Tarzan ist zu einem kräftigen jungen Mann herangewachsen, trifft eine Expedition im Urwald ein. Professor Porter und dessen hübsche Tocher Jane wollen Gorillas studieren. Eigentlich ganz harmlos - wäre da nicht der finstere Expeditionsführer Clayton, der ganz andere Ziele verfolgt.
